Millard Fillmore Stancell (1848-1907) of Northampton County, NC, entered the University in 1866, joined the Philanthropic Society, and left in 1868 without earning a degree. He became a physician and for twenty-five years was sheriff and registrar of deeds in Northampton County. In 1878 he married Virginia Stephenson.
